|

I was looking at the rules and I think we play some lost discs as out of bounds when we shouldn't. For instance the rules say that a disc is out of bounds by "A disc shall be considered out-of-bounds only when it comes to rest and it is clearly and completely surrounded by the out-of-bounds area." The rules say a lost disc is "lost if the player cannot locate it within three minutes after arriving at the spot where it was last seen by the group or an official."
So in instances like Seans throw on hole 16 last Saturday when we could not find the disc did we play it wrong? Each has a one throw penalty but a lost disc is thrown from the last throw while an OB disc is thrown from one meter from the place it went OB. I believe we declared it lost but then I think we played it wrong. I have seen this happen before in a tournament and I want to make sure I understand the rules. So what do you guys think? |

thanx sheldon, considering the amount of times i have been in that position i do not believe i have once been told by anyone that is the correct way of playing a lost disc(or at least that i remember), i have to blame myself for not ever looking the rule up myself but i am also surprised just the overall lack of knowledge almost universally with those ive played with, and im sure many others, on this rule. thats twice today I have learned somthing new about rules of play because of you, i had just read a "rules:piont of contact" question on dgcr that u asked ealier today, everybody check that out you will probably learn somthing from that too. |

you are correct on playing a lost disc from your previous lie sheldon.
this is where PROVISIONAL throws should be used.
it's just that when we are playing "casual golf" i haven't been strict on the ruling for two reasons.... #1 - rather than have a player go all the way back to his now "unmarked" previous lie and hold up the speed of play...
and #2 - player has just LOST (and may not ever get back) a disc that $'s was shelled out for, we(I) have been cutting said player some slack and let play continue from where disc was lost.
but....
if you want, we can start playing BY THE RULES and actually start calling some.
best reason for that being that players who do not have a good grasp of the rules would learn'em. _________________ "that shot was...TREEmendous"!!!

Sean I've always played a lost disc the same as an OB also because I thought that was the rule too. I think as a club we should try to play more by the rules so we are aware of the correct procedures for tournament play. Like Dave said if we are playing "casual play" then I would certainly let people move away from thorns or poison ivy or any lie that would not benefit the player. However, we are playing a "League" and this league is for money and standings and should be played as a tournament.
If there is someone new to disc golf I wouldn't mind giving them the edge on a bad throw or lost disc (especially on our challenging course), but the players who have been playing awhile and want to learn should play by the rules because that's what they are for. |

well put sheldon,i agree and have no problem playing that way.
we need to make some kind of an announcement before the next league play then...just to let everyone know that since this a step above casual play that you may get called on the rules and questions will be answered. _________________ "that shot was...TREEmendous"!!!
